Prepare Your Materials
You will prepare your course materials for an online course the same way that you did for your traditional course(s). Begin by asking the following questions:
- What will I teach?
- How will I teach it?
- How will I ensure that students are learning what is being taught?
Read the chapter, Preparing or Revising a Course by Barbara Gross Davis that is on the internet and think of how to relate the information to the development of your online course. You can read the chapter by clicking on the following text link: Preparing or Revising a Course.
Follow these steps:
- Gather your course materials and content in a central location. Remember to include items such as handouts, slide shows, syllabus, overheads, lecture notes, projects, assessments, and discussion topics.
- Determine what formats your materials exist in and make note of items already in electronic formats such as word processing documents, spreadsheets, and slides.
- Make sure that you will accommodate different types of learners by having graphics and text for visual learners so they can see to foster learning. Provide narration and text for verbal learners.
- Identify measurable course objectives that incorporate materials to be delivered online. Determine what core competencies and knowledge students will need to meet these objectives.
Before you make an outline of your course, prepare your documents for online delivery, or build a course skeleton, you must make sure that you know how to create electronic folders on your computer for files that will enable you to organize your course content. You can view a tutorial online offered by Cyber Tech Help by clicking on the following text link: How to Create Folders or download the tutorial in PDF format by clicking on the following text link: Download How to Create Folders. Once you have learned to create folders you are ready for the next step.
